Little Cottonwood Canyon was carved by glaciers thousands of years ago, creating its dramatic steep walls and rugged terrain. The canyon is home to large granite formations, which have been used in the construction of historic buildings, including the Salt Lake Temple. In the 19th century, the canyon was a major silver mining region. The Town of Alta was initially a mining settlement before transitioning into a ski destination. Remnants of old mines and tunnels still exist.
